“Eat Less, Move More.” Really? Still believing?

“Eat Less, Move More” Is Not the Answer. Here’s What Actually Works.

At one of my lessons, I heard the classic advice again: “Eat less, move more.” My experience and knowledge in the field kicked off: STOP. It means I completely disagree. Not because discipline doesn’t matter. This message is biologically naive, psychologically damaging, and practically unsustainable. Let’s “Why So”?

1. Eating Less Is Not the Same as Eating Right.

The human body is not a calorie calculator. Different foods trigger different hormonal and metabolic responses, even when calories are identical.

What does calorie restriction mean?

  • Increases hunger hormones,

  • Reduces metabolic rate (adaptive thermogenesis),

  • Encourages muscle loss instead of fat loss.

This is why “eating less” often leads to plateaus, cravings, and rebound weight gain.

My London Diet principle: do not eat less. Eat right. When food quality, timing, and balance are correct, the body doesn’t fight you.

2. Moving More Often or With Higher Intensity Means Stressing the Body More.

The idea that more exercise automatically equals better results ignores physiology.

Excessive or poorly planned movement:

  • Raises cortisol,

  • Increases appetite,

  • Can pause fat loss even with high effort.

Research consistently shows that exercise alone is an unreliable driver of long-term weight loss. It must be paired with the right nutritional strategy.

My London Diet principle: do not move more. Move smart. Movement should support metabolism, not exhaust it.

3. Starvation Is Not Sustainable.

Any method built on deprivation eventually collapses.
Not because people lack willpower, but because the body is designed to survive.

When food feels scarce:

  • The brain prioritises survival over aesthetics,

  • Obsession with food increases,

  • Compliance drops.

That is not failure. It is biology.

My London Diet principle: sustainability comes from working with the body, not against it.

So, “Eat less, move more” is not a strategy. It is a slogan. A real method considers:

  • Food quality over quantity

  • Metabolic response over calorie math

  • Smart movement over constant exertion

  • Consistency over extremes

The takeaway: If eating less and moving more worked, people wouldn’t be stuck in the same cycle for years. The answer isn’t less effort. It’s a better strategy.
